Performing community service is a wonderful and rewarding experience for both children and adults. Junior Optimist Clubs are currently available at 10 Farmington Public Schools and Our Lady of Sorrows. This program is sponsored by the Farmington-Farmington Hills Optimist Club, and is called Junior Optimist Octagon International (JOOI). JOOI Clubs (pronounced “joy”) are student-led organizations that meet once each month, with a single parent or teacher in the role of advisor, mentor and facilitator along with support from the F2H Optimist Club. FPS Upper Elementary and Middle Schools will have an additional meeting each month at the Costick Center. At these meetings students from Dunckel, East, Power and Warners schools will share progress on their projects, participate in team-building exercises, and meet with local community service organizations. Transportation to these meetings is provided free of charge by the After School Program. Students from these schools do NOT need to be enrolled in the After School Program to use the bus transportation to our monthly Junior Optimist meetings at the Costick Center.

Junior Optimist Clubs elect their own leaders, set up their own meeting schedule, and choose a community service project which they will plan, organize and execute. The project can be in support of their school, the PTA, the local community or any charitable organization of their choosing. At the completion of the service project, they participate in a special ceremony where the Farmington-Farmington Hills Optimist Club will recognize their achievement and present them with awards for their accomplishments. It’s a great opportunity to give something back to our community while our children learn to appreciate the value of community service at a young age.
